Reliquary... a web comic with diversity

Go check out Susan Knowles' webcomic Reliquary-- a dark fantasy with zombie-like angels. She just produced an ashcan of it over the summer.

It's chock full of diversity, agic, friendship and women doing useful stuff instead of being love objects, set decorations and side kicks. So are all the rest of her stories and many of her illustrations.

Argh argh argh!!! >:/

Okay. Have any of you ever heard about airlines leaving suitcases behind? Because the airplane is already too heavy, or something? I guess I can understand their reasons. I think it is idiotic, but well ... their plane and all, right?

Except when they leave behind a batch of H1N1 vaccines, with 40% of the doses my State will receive this year.

Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Christo review

First published at Sequential Tart, it covers diversity (and the lack thereof) in an otherwise excellent sci-fi anime based upon black French author Alexandre Dumas' famous novel.

visit historic Winchester!

After sixteen epic hours in the car yesterday, I made it home. Yes, sixteen hours, by myself, with only my increasingly disjointed thoughts for company. It was wonderful to see my family, and I actually got along with the youngest sister (we can only take each other in very small doses), but they're on the far side of a drive that involved an hour-long detour around a rockslide and another hour spent in traffic in Cincinnatti, so now I'm mostly happy to be back with Finn, whom I've missed.

Although I did see this yesterday. Yes, I totally stopped at this exit to refuel (gas for the car and coffee for me):

Trin and I decided that, ten years or so from now, "Historic Winchester" will actually mean "Come and see a motel where the Winchester brothers spent the night during October 2005." There will be numerous claims eventually proven false by scholars, sort of like how there are enough splinters out there to make a grove of True Crosses. Amirite? I think so.

.in other news: I'm still kind of busy this week, which is annoying; it's the kind of busy that is not "working on my dissertation." I'm doing a presentation thingy on Friday that, for some reason, has changed from "practice job talk" to "part of a chapter." WHAT PART OF A CHAPTER, ADVISOR? I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL FOR WEEKS. *hands* Well, they're going to get the first version of my interview talk, and maybe by some miracle I will actually be able to present it to an actual school that might like to hire me. Once I'm done with that, maybe if I'm good I can start working on actual work again.

Speaking of busy and having hit skip=100 after a single day of posts, there is no way, no way, I'm going to be able to catch up on my flist, so I will just say... HELLO AFTER MORE THAN A WEEK I HAVE MISSED YOU ALL WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO??????

Oh, and cut because it's slightly TMI... allergies and That Time )

..I don't even know.

Child's essay for class for Thanksgiving.

...no, really. Just. Um. {} are my additions

What I Am Thankful For {by Child}

On thanksgiving I had said I was thankful for my loving mother. I was thankful for my three cousins {Niece, Niece Two, and Nephew}. But last I am thankful for my whole family and this glorious country of America.

It was a cold Dec 7, 2012. In a post-apocalyptic world, dead bodies had lined the streets in black body bags. Cars were abandoned. I was in the middle of 100s of infected people with a bomb. But let me back up to when it all started. At midnight on January 1, 2012, a mass zombie outbreak had happened because a mutated meteor had hit the earth. The people in {unknown word} had died but kept walking to be {unknown word}

Child: What do you think?
Me: So it's genetic, huh?
Child: *bemused*

He's gone to type and finish it.

So. Apparently, destroying the world in fiction is like, a gene or something. Or maybe it was too much Torchwood?

*bewildered*

ETA: Second draft is lingering lovingly on the details of the rotting corpses. I may never sleep again.

ETA 2: Holy God, he thinks he's writing a children's book.

12 & 1/2 hours of sending emails

That was a long-ass, boring day. But I'm going home now, and I will have soup and a refreshing adult beverage and approx. 43 minutes of Wilson, so all is GOOD.

Alaya Dawn Johnson, Racing the Dark

41. Alaya Dawn Johnson, Racing the Dark

The first book in a YA trilogy set in a Polynesia-inspired world (with elements from several other cultures; I recognized a few Japanese things in particular), it's a bit hard to describe the plot, because it's very episodic and involves many, many twists and turns. The main character is Lana, who grows up on an idyllic rural island before finding out that she is destined for something big. Her attempts to escape that destiny start off the plot. The other main character is Kohaku, a young man from an urban center who has come to Lana's island to teach and do anthropological research. Back home, he lives with his deaf sister, Emea. Other important figures include a scary floating death spirit, a man who is half water-spirit, a fortune-teller, healer, and witch who knows more than she's telling, and a young man from a nomadic tribe who does not believe in the magic used by the rest of the characters.

This book involves a lot of mature topics (including abortion, suicide, murder, prostitution, and torture, to name a few), which I know isn't unusual for YA books, but the sheer number of "bad" things surprised me. Despite all that, it's not really a depressing book. Everything is handled with the seriousness and weight they deserve, but they're not dwelt on. In general, I found the book to be very fast-moving and entertaining. The writing is not the most beautiful, but man, does Johnson do plot well. This book is very much a page-turner, and it gripped me and didn't let go. I can't wait for the sequel to come out!
